Objetives and actions

What we propose ?

To achieve this objective, with input from key stakeholders in Tijuana and San Diego, we developed a proposal for socio-environmental solutions to the problems of the Tijuana River, using participatory methodologies from Theory of Change and Conversational Mapping. Based on a solutions tree developed by the team of co-authors in a binational participatory workshop (February 23, 2023, at El COLEF) with key stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and international agencies, we developed seven objectives, along with their respective actions. The proposals are the product of consensus among a group of experts in the areas of migration, public health, human rights, security, public policy, water management, and the environment.

Objetives

The objectives of this project were developed through a collaborative process involving academia, civil society organizations, specialists and the community. Together, they outline a comprehensive roadmap to address both the social and health needs of the populations living along or passing through the Tijuana River, as well as the environmental challenges affecting the watershed and its ecosystem.

Each objective identifies a priority problem, defines specific goals and proposes actions aimed at improving quality of life, strengthening public health, reducing risks, restoring the territory and promoting sustainable water and environmental management.

The proposals developed by the environmental working group can be summarized as generating nature-based solutions, transitioning from a model based on centralized wastewater treatment megaprojects to the installation of green water infrastructure, and opting for a decentralized treatment system.
